Samuel Campbell

Builder

Samuel Campbell

Samuel Campbell built approximately 13 homes within the TPEHD. He was born in Northern Ireland in about 1883. Samuel and his family left Europe in 1894 to immigrate to Canada. The names on the ship’s Passenger List were, Solomon Campbell-Husband, Mazel Campbell-Wife, Samuel Campbell-Child, Arien Campbell-Child, and Mazel Campbell-Infant. Based on the family’s Hebrew first names, the Campbells were probably of the Jewish faith. In 1905, Samuel immigrated to the US from Canada and resided in Salt Lake City, Utah. That same year, Samuel was baptized into the Morman faith. In 1930, Samuel became a nationalized US citizen.

While he worked as a carpenter in Utah, he married Della Mar Tate in 1912. They had eight children, unfortunately only 5 lived past infancy. The family lived in Salt Lake City until the 1920s. By the 1930’s Census the family lived in Mesa, Arizona.

In 1935, the Campbells lived in San Diego in University Heights. Samuel continued his career as a builder and in 1938 built a house at 2354 Plum Street in Loma Portal. This house was built in the Streamline Moderne style. It is individually designated as a historic resource listed on the City of San Diego’s Historic Resource Register.

By 1940, Samuel lived at 4508 Terrace Drive in Kensington. This is during the time he was building in Talmadge (1939 to 1942). The house on Terrace Drive no longer exists due to the construction of Interstate 15. Samuel retired from building in the 1960s. He and Della spent their final years residing in La Mesa, California.
